Week 9

Flavonoids, Alzheimer's Disease and Reactive Oxygen Species

On the 15th of march we had two speakers from the University of Michigan, Alaina DeToma and Joseph Braymer. DeToma presentation was about flavonoids and Alzheimer’s disease and Braymer did his on “Exploring the Reactivity of a High-Valent Nonheme Oxoiron (IV) Intermediate with Reactive Oxygen Species.”

flavanoids and Alzheimer’s disease and detoxifying hydrogen peroxides

Ninth week’s seminar was held on March 15, 2012 with two guest speaker Alaina S. DeToma and Joseph J. Braymer. Alaina S. DeToma and Joseph J. Braymer are chemistry graduate students in the Labs of Mi Hee Lim, University of Michigan. In this seminar, Alaina S. DeToma received her BS in chemistry from Elizabethtown College. She shared her research about flavanoids and Alzheimer’s disease. Joseph J. Braymer received his BS in chemistry from Edinboro University of Pennsylvania. He presented findings from his research about detoxifying hydrogen peroxides.

Flavonoids and Alzheimer's Disease; Detoxifying Hydrogen Peroxide

This week’s presentation was brought by two different guest speakers. Both of them are PhD candidates from University of Michigan in Ann Arbor. The first speaker, Alaina DeToma, talked about “Flavonoids and Alzheimer’s”. And the Second speaker, Joseph Braymer, talked about “Detoxifying Hydrogen Peroxide”.

Flavanoids and Alzheimer's + Detoxifying Hydrogen Peroxide

On March 15, two PhD candidates from the University of Michigan, Alaina S. DeToma and Joseph J. Braymer, came to speak about their research. DeToma’s research involves flavanoids and Alzheimer’s disease while Braymer’s research dealt with detoxifying hydrogen peroxides.

Flavonoids and Iron Coordination Complexes

March 15, 2012

Alaina S. DeToma and Joseph J. Braymer are chemistry graduate students and Ph.D. candidates working under Dr. Mi Hee Lim at the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor. DeToma’s presentation was about the possibility of using flavonoids to prevent Alzheimer’s disease and Braymer’s was about the use of an iron coordination complex as a detoxifying agent.

“Flavonoids and Alzheimer’s” and “Detoxifying Hydrogen Peroxide”

Alaina DeToma and Joseph Braymer presented their seminars, “Flavonoids and Alzheimer’s” and “Detoxifying Hydrogen Peroxide” on Thursday, March 15, 2012.  Alaina has a Chemistry BS from Elizabethtown College PA, and Joseph graduated from Edinboro University of Pennsylvania with a BS in Chemistry. Currently, both are recipients of graduate awards, honors and fellowships, having also published and presented their research findings in high-impact journals and at National American Chemical Society Meetings.

Alzheimers, Flavanoids, and Radicals

On Thursday, March 15, we had the pleasure of listening to presentations by two PhD candidates from the same lab at University of Michigan. The first was about flavonoids and Alzheimer’s, presented by Alaina DeToma. The second was entitled “Exploring the Reactivity of a High-Valent Nonheme Oxoiron (IV) Intermediate with Reactive Oxygen Species” and was presented by Joseph J. Braymer.

Flavonoids & Alzheimer's and Detoxifying Hydrogen

This week we had the honor of having 2 persenter, both Ph.D. candidates from the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor. Our first presenter was Alaina S. DeToma  and she presented on the topic of Flavonoids & Alzheimer’s Disease. Currently Alzheimer’s Disease is the 6th leading cause of death in the United States, unfortunately there is no cure for the diseases, providing lots of motivation for research.
